Sujan Selven, Greens candidate for Prospect. NSW election: Saturday 13 March 2027. Get involved

Priority 02

Clean Energy matters

On a 40 degree day, turning on the air conditioner should not mean dreading the bill. In January 2020, Penrith reached 48.9 degrees, the hottest temperature ever recorded in Greater Sydney. Cleaner, cheaper power means a cooler home and a lower bill for households across Prospect.

Why it matters

Hot summers and high bills hit Western Sydney first.

A typical home on the Endeavour Energy network, which supplies much of Western Sydney, is set to pay about $2,328 a year for electricity on the default offer from 1 July 2026. That is $83 less than last year, which is welcome, but it is still a big bill. And many people cannot fix the problem themselves: 43 per cent of homes in Cumberland are rented, so a lot of households cannot fit solar panels, insulation or a heat pump on their own.

What changes for people

  1. Lower power bills from clean energy that the public owns.

  2. A cooler, better insulated home, including a rental.

  3. Real help to swap gas appliances for efficient electric ones.

What I am working towards

I will fight for

I want Prospect households to have lower bills and cooler homes, powered by clean energy that the public owns. These are the changes I will fight for, and what each one means for you.

PowerNSW, a public non-profit electricity company, to bring power bills down

A power company that exists to cut your bill, not to make a profit.

Publicly owned wind, solar and storage projects

Clean power that the public owns, with the benefits going back to households.

One million homes off gas over six years, with grants and zero-interest loans for heat pumps and induction cooktops

Real help with the cost of swapping a gas heater, hot water system or stove for an efficient electric one.

Efficiency upgrades for households, starting with those who struggle most with their bills

Insulation and upgrades that keep a home cooler in summer and warmer in winter.

Minimum efficiency and comfort standards for rentals within five years

Tenants get a home that stays comfortable in a heatwave.

Support for household and business solar

Families and local small businesses can cut their own bills.

The result

lower power bills, a home that stays cool in a heatwave, and help to leave gas behind.
