Opal fares are frozen, but you can still pay $2,600 a year
The weekly cap stays at $50. Here is what free public transport would put back in your pocket.
Sujan Selven, Greens candidate for Prospect. NSW election: Saturday 13 March 2027. Get involved
Before you reach work, school or the doctor, the Opal card has taken its share. A weekly commuter can pay $50 a week, or $2,600 a year, just to get around Sydney. Getting around should not cost that much.

Why it matters
Opal fares are frozen at 2025 prices until mid-2027, which helps. But the adult weekly cap is still $50, so a household with two weekly commuters can pay up to $5,200 a year. Concession card holders pay up to $25 a week. Those costs come out of the same pay that covers rent, food and power.
What changes for people
No fare to pay on buses, trains and ferries.
More of your pay left each week for rent, food and bills.
Services that are frequent and reliable, so the bus you need turns up.

What I am working towards
I want getting around Prospect to be free, frequent and reliable, so more of your pay stays in your pocket. These are the changes I will fight for, and what each one means for you.
Free buses, trains and ferries across NSW
A weekly adult commuter keeps up to $2,600 a year. A household with two commuters keeps up to $5,200. A concession card holder keeps up to $1,300.

Services that grow with demand, so the bus and train you rely on keep turning up.
No more spending on ticketing and fare enforcement
Money now spent on collecting fares goes back into running services.
Fully funded public schools that are genuinely free
Fewer school costs landing on families.
How it is paid for: taxes and levies on property developers, coal and gas companies and the big banks.
up to $2,600 a year back in the pocket of every weekly commuter, and buses and trains that keep running often.
